Waimairi Beach Golf Club,

Christchurch, New Zealand

Waimairi Beach Golf Club has been at the heart of community life in Christchurch's eastern suburbs for over 80 years.

Devastating earthquakes that rocked the city in 2010 and 2011 damaged the back 9 of the course, and destroyed the clubhouse. The silver lining was that this led to the remarkable transformation of the previously pine lined fairways into an open and undulating, strategic course reflective of its coastal location.

Kura Design created a masterplan and detailed design to establish a new clubhouse in a central location on the course and re-route 13 holes accordingly.

The course has been modernised with improved strategy and enhancing the coastal character, creating a new and distinctive identity.

Sandy soils allowed construction of the 13 holes to be completed within a remarkable 9 months and opened 4 months later.  At least 9 holes were playable at any one time during construction.

The course is challenging for those who take a risk, with the carefully placed shot being rewarded.
